FINISH GUIDE

What Soft Touch Actually Feels Like in the Hand

Soft touch lamination creates a surface that is matte and distinctly soft to the touch. It feels like a fine, velvety coating rather than the slick plastic of gloss or the dry paper of standard matte.

What soft touch lamination feels like

When you hold a card with soft touch lamination, your fingers register a gentle friction. It is not slippery. Instead, the surface offers a slight, pleasant resistance that feels warm and organic.

This tactile quality comes from the specific polymer used in the lamination process. Unlike standard matte lamination, which creates a flat, dry surface, soft touch adds a layer of texture that mimics the feel of premium fabric or high-quality leather.

Comparison with Other Finishes

To understand the difference, compare it to the other options we offer:

  • Gloss Lamination: This finish is shiny and slick. It reflects light sharply. The feel is hard and plastic-like.
  • Matte Lamination: This finish is flat and non-reflective. It feels like standard paper or cardstock. It is dry and neutral.
  • Soft Touch Lamination: This finish is matte but adds a soft, velvety texture. It is the most expensive of the three laminations because of the specialized material required.

Most business cards on the market use matte lamination. Soft touch is currently spreading, but it remains a distinct choice that changes how the card feels in the hand.

Interaction with Stock

The finish interacts with the paper stock beneath it. On coated Art Card, the soft touch layer covers the coating, changing the surface from potentially glossy to a uniform, soft matte.

Soft touch is applied to coated Art Card, where the film covers the coating and turns a potentially glossy surface into a uniform soft matte. Natural and texture stocks — 360gsm Natural White, 335gsm Kraft Card — are supplied uncoated, and we do not laminate them as standard. Their pulp texture is the finish.

Why It Matters for Perception

Humans judge quality through touch before they read the text. A card that feels soft and substantial creates an immediate subconscious impression of care and quality.

This does not mean soft touch is the “best” finish for everyone. Preference is subjective. Some clients prefer the sharp look of gloss, while others prefer the clean simplicity of matte. Soft touch is a specific option that offers a unique tactile experience. It is a tool for design, not a mandatory standard.

Frequently asked questions

Does soft touch lamination change the color of the print?

No. The lamination is transparent. It changes the surface texture and sheen, but the ink colors remain vibrant and true to the digital proof.

Is soft touch lamination durable?

Yes. Lamination protects the card from moisture, fingerprints, and wear. Soft touch lamination is a protective layer, just like gloss or matte, but with a different surface texture.

Can I apply soft touch to any stock?

We apply soft touch to our coated Art Card stocks. Natural and texture stocks are supplied uncoated and are not laminated as standard; a specific request is the only exception.
