Classic Black: The Weight of Absence

A classic black business card uses our 400gsm uncoated natural stock. Its deep, matte surface and substantial weight change how a design is perceived before the recipient even reads a word.

Most business cards use white or off-white coated paper. A classic black business card breaks that visual expectation immediately. It signals that the card is not a disposable flyer, but a deliberate object.

What classic black business card stock is

400gsm Classic Black is part of our natural premium range. Unlike coated Art Card, it is uncoated. This means the paper has a genuine pulp texture. You can see and feel the fibres.

When ink is applied to this stock, it is absorbed into the paper rather than sitting on top. The result is a dry, matte finish that feels organic and grounded. It does not have the slight sheen or “plastic” look of coated papers.

The weight is significant at 400gsm. It is the heaviest stock we stock. It sits in the hand with a solid, authoritative presence. It does not bend or feel flimsy.

How It Changes the Design

Because the background is black, your design choices behave differently.

White or light ink pops. A simple white logo or text on black creates high contrast. It is clean and legible. You do not need heavy fonts or large logos to be seen.

Colour behaves differently. Bright colours on black can appear more intense. However, because the paper is uncoated, the ink absorbs and dries matte. The colours will not look as vibrant or glossy as they would on coated Art Card. They look more muted and sophisticated.

Negative space is powerful. On a white card, empty space is white. On a black card, empty space is black. This allows for a design that feels spacious and calm, even with minimal elements.

Tier and Perception

Simple printing on 400gsm Classic Black already sits at the Premium tier. The material itself carries weight and rarity. More than 95% of business cards use standard white or off-white materials. Holding a black card is a distinct experience.

You can push this into the Signature tier with creative finishing. Blind deboss, emboss, or foil stamping on black creates a tactile dimension. The contrast between the matte paper and a shiny foil, or the physical indentation of a deboss, adds a “wow” factor.

However, the design must be judged carefully. A cluttered design on black can look muddy. The power of 400gsm Classic Black comes from restraint and clarity.

Finishing Options

Classic Black is supplied uncoated, and that is how we print it. Lamination is not part of the standard product for this stock. The finishes that suit it are foil stamping, blind deboss and emboss, which work with the dyed board instead of covering it.

  • Foil stamping: gold, silver, bronze or rose gold against the black surface.
  • Blind deboss: a recessed impression with no ink, using the surface alone.
  • Emboss: a raised impression that catches light along its edge.

The choice of finish depends on how much you want the board itself to stay visible. Foil and blind deboss let the black surface do most of the work.

Frequently asked questions

Is a classic black business card hard to print on?

No, it prints well. The main difference is that the ink absorbs into the paper, resulting in a matte finish rather than a glossy one. Designers should account for this by using solid, high-contrast elements.

Can I use full-colour printing on Classic Black?

Yes, you can print full colour. However, the uncoated nature of the stock means colours will appear more muted and matte compared to coated Art Card. Bright, vibrant colours are best used as accents rather than large fields.

Is 400gsm too thick for a classic black business card?

No. It is a standard premium weight. It is heavier than the typical 300-350gsm cards, which makes it feel substantial and durable in the hand.
